Chapter 6

Apparently, my newfound magic decided to spice things up a little.

Jareth had jumped back in alarm, his shirt on fire. We both cried out in surprise, trying to put it out. It was pretty embarrassing.

We didn’t talk about it as we climbed into the car to drive to his house and get him a change of clothes. I only hoped we didn’t run into any assassins. I wasn’t in the mood to fight them off right now.

“We should probably ask questions to find the lead Raven,” I said, glancing over at Jareth, still surprised I let him drive. I never let people drive my car. Yet here he was, taking us around the city as if it were his vehicle.

I saw a blur out of the corner of my eye, another car crashing into the side of mine, my head shattering the window as we spun off the road. Coming to a stop, I looked up, seeing blood smeared on the glass.

Jareth reached out, touching my head. “Are you okay?”

Nodding, I frowned. “An assassin?”

“Probably.”

We opened our doors. I pulled my gun, using the door as a shield, looking around. When I heard a few pings against the car, I crouched down, trying to find a target. At least it wasn’t a busy road. I would hate to have to worry about innocents getting hit.

Well, maybe they shouldn’t be walking around in the middle of Detroit.

“Where’d they go?” I asked, seeing Jareth glance over the top of his door. A bullet shattered the glass a second later, Jareth quickly ducking out of sight.

“Too chicken to-” he started, just as someone ran up behind him, kicking him in the back.

I stood, prepared to help him, as more bullets hit the car. I crouched and looked around the back of the car, seeing an assassin named Jenny. I started in her direction, pulling the trigger. She dodged, somersaulting to the ground.

I strode up to her and kicked out, catching her on the chin. She grunted as her head snapped back. I punched her in the face, then the stomach. She recovered quickly and went on the offensive, laughing with each hit that landed, pissing me off. My body started to tingle. When I swung, a ball of fire flew in her direction, hitting her in the midsection. She cried out in surprise as it knocked her backwards, fear filling her eyes.

I smiled and flung out my hands, another fireball hitting her in the shoulder. She flew back, landing on the ground, hard.

Glancing at Jareth, I saw him knock a male assassin to the ground, grab him by the head, and rip it off. My stomach roiled at the wet, sucking sound it made.

Turning back to Jenny, seeing her climbing to her feet, I kicked her again. She stumbled back, weakening. When she feebly struck out at me, I grabbed her wrist and twisted her arm behind her.

“Let’s go for a ride, Jenny. If you don’t cooperate, I will kill you.”

“You’ll kill me anyway,” she growled.
